Jim Klein, President, American Benefits Council


Jim will discuss the implications of healthcare reform legislation and discuss the ways in which healthcare delivery, policy, and reimbursement is changing.

James A. Klein is President of the American Benefits Council, a trade association based in Washington, D.C. representing primarily Fortune 500 companies that either sponsor or administer health and retirement benefits covering more than 100 million Americans. Jim is frequently quoted in both the national and benefits media on pension and health care topics. He has appeared on all the major television networks, discussing a wide range of employee benefits policy matters.

Jim serves on the Association Council of the American Council for Capital Formation and the Government Liaison Committee of the International Foundation of Employee Benefits Plans. Jim is a private sector advisor to the U.S. government’s delegation to the Pension and Insurance Committee of the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). He was a member of the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Global Aging Initiative. He travels extensively internationally advising public officials and private sector representatives on the development of retirement and health care systems.

Prior to joining the Council, Jim was Manager of Pension and Health Care Policy for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and before that practiced law for a Washington, D.C. firm specializing in employee benefits. Jim also worked as a legislative assistant for Congressman John J. LaFalce (D-NY). Jim graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University with a degree in Bioethics and graduated with honors from the National Law Center-George Washington University.

Registration Policy:

  • Members: There is no cost for members to attend the HRLF breakfast programs.  If you need to cancel your reservation, we ask that you do so at least 3 days in advance.
  • Guest Policy: Our membership focus is the top corporate HR and the top HRD person in organizations of over 1000 employees and who have strategic responsibilities. Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis depending on responsibilities of the current assignment, as well as past experience of the candidate. Currently, HRLF has a freeze on service provider memberships and is unable to approve any guests who are service providers.

    If you are an HRLF member and you would like to bring a corporate guest, please include your guest's name, title, company and email address in your registration request.  The membership committee is responsible for approving guest requests for each meeting.  Please allow 3 business days for a response to your request.  Guests who are approved will be charged $50 to attend the breakfast programs.
